"Blow Away (For Bill)" annotated

"_Blow_Away_ is a comfort for the fear of dying, and for those of us who believe that music is perhaps an exception to the _Never_For_Ever_ rule." (1980, KBC 7)
この曲のテーマは、"Never For Ever"の原則、すなわち世の中のものは すべて移ろって行き、永遠には生きられないという定めに反し、 音楽や愛のような無形のものは、その命を長く保つことができる という可能性である。

この"engineer"は明らかに照明技師の Bill Duffield のことを 指している。もともと、突然Tour of Life ツアーの準備中に 事故死したBillのために曲を書こうという意図があったと、 Kate はインタビューで語っている。
"No. Bill is Bill Duffield, the gentleman who died on our tour and in so many ways he made me want to write the song right from the beginning. It was such a tragedy and he was such a beautiful person that it only seemed right that there should be something on the next album for him." (1980, Never For Ever EMI)

この部分は、Kateが"The Observer"紙で読んだ臨死体験を持つ人の話が 下敷きになっている。

その臨死体験の中では、自分の肉体を離れて長い廊下をあるいて 行った先に部屋があって、その中には先に死んでしまった親しかった 友人達が集っていたという。
Kateは、ミュージシャンが死んだときにはミュージシャンの 集まりがあるというように、共通のものを持つ人々は、時代を超えて 死後の世界で一緒になれるという期待を示して、死ぬことへの 恐怖を取り払い、安らぎを感じさせたいと願っている。

Hereが現世であって、死者たちから呼ばれているけど死にたくないという 解釈もあるが、"back there"と言っていることから、 "Here"は生死の境目で訪れた「部屋」であると考えられ、 "thump, "bump", "dump" は人工呼吸などの蘇生の試みだと 考えられる。

Shakespear の Othello からの引用。 5幕2場の最初のOthelloの台詞;
Yet she must die, else she'll betray more men.
Put out the light, and then put out the light:
If I quench thee, thou flaming minister,
I can again thy former light restore,
Should I repent me; but once put out thine,
The cunning pattern of excelling nature,
I know not where is that Promethean heat
That can thy light relume: when I have pluck'd the rose,
I cannot give it vital growth again,
これは、Othelloが嫉妬に駆られて妻Desdemonaを殺そうとする 場面での台詞。最初の"put out the light"は灯りを消し、 2番目の"put out the light"は、妻を殺すことを意味している。

"Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."(創世記)
"dust" は塵に帰すべき肉体のこともいうので、"blow"も 風に帰る「息吹き」としてもいいのではないか。
